Il piccolo santuario della Madonna del Patrocinio, detto anche di Santa Maria del Calcare, si trova lungo la vecchia mulattiera che da Bieno e Santino portava ai pascoli solari di Ompio, circondato da fitti boschi di castagno e rovere. Qui, fin dal ‘300 vi era una cappella con dipinto l’affresco della Madonna in trono con il Bambino che tiene in mano un melograno, inserito in una mandorla di luce a forma di arcobaleno. A questa cappella accorrevano numerose persone da tutta la zona, nella certezza di poter ottenere abbondanza di grazia. Grazie alle offerte e al contributo di tutta la comunità, nel 1727 fu eretto il Santuario, per dare una sistemazione più degna all’immagine della Madonna Madre, la quale fu staccata dal muro della cappella e trasferita nella nuova costruzione. Il Santuario fu meta di infinite processioni penitenziali e propiziatorie di contadini, pastori e boscaioli, e ogni anno vi si svolge qui la festa del Patrocinio, la terza domenica di agosto, con la messa e l’incanto delle offerte.
The small sanctuary of the Madonna del Patrocinio, also known as Santa Maria del Calcare, is located along the old mule track that from Bieno and Santino led to the sunny mountain pastures of Ompio, surrounded by thick chestnut tree and oak woods. Here there is a 14th-century chapel with a fresco of the “Madonna and Child on a Throne”: the Child is holding a pomegranate in His hand. The image is inserted into a rainbow-shaped almond of light. Many people from all over the area came to this chapel, since they hoped to obtain an abundance of grace. Thanks to the offers and the contribution of the whole community, in 1727 the Sanctuary was erected in order to exhibit the image of Mary our Mother in a more respectable way; in fact, it was detached from the wall of the chapel and transferred to the new construction. The Sanctuary was the destination of many penitential and propitiatory processions of farmers, shepherds and woodmen, and every year the patronal feast is celebrated on the third Sunday of August, with the holy mass and the auction of the offerings.
