L’ossario, eretto tra il 1945 e il 1946, conserva i resti di alcuni caduti partigiani della “Brigata Cesare Battisti”, una delle formazioni partigiane formatesi nell’Alto Verbano subito dopo l’8 settembre 1943. A partire dal 12 giugno 1944 il settore della Valle Intrasca, ossia il territorio relativo ad Aurano, Alpe Piaggia, Passo Folungo, Vadà, Pizzo Marona e Monte Zeda subì il rastrellamento nazifascista, partito dal settore Val Grande e da quello di Miazzina. A fine giugno le perdite partigiane furono di circa 500 uomini. La formazione Cesare Battisti perse 34 componenti: i primi furono gli 8 partigiani catturati all’Alpe Piaggia dai tedeschi e fucilati il 17 giugno del 1944 dopo aver fatto loro scavare una fossa nel cimitero di Aurano. Essi sono ricordati dalla lapide posta nella piazza del paese.
Il monumento invece è dimora, e rappresenta un perenne ricordo, delle spoglie di 8 caduti ignoti i cui poveri resti vennero recuperati sulle montagne della Valle Intrasca negli anni successivi alla Liberazione.
The ossuary, erected between 1945 and 1946, preserves the remains of some fallen partisans of the “Cesare Battisti Brigade”, one of the partisan formations that originated in the Upper Verbano area immediately after September 8, 1943. Starting from 12 June 1944 the area of the Valle Intrasca, that is, the territory of Aurano, Alpe Piaggia, Passo Folungo, Vadà, Pizzo Marona and Monte Zeda was subject to the Nazi-Fascist mopping-up, which started from the Val Grande and Miazzina areas. At the end of June the partisan losses were about 500 men killed. The Cesare Battisti formation lost 34 members: the first ones were the 8 partisans captured at Alpe Piaggia by the Germans and shot on June 17, 1944 after being obliged to dig a pit in the cemetery of Aurano. A tombstone was placed in the square of the village in their memory.
The monument represents the eternal memory of the 8 unknown fallen whose remains were recovered on the mountains of the Valle Intrasca in the years after the Liberation.
