Nel 1585 esisteva già un piccolo oratorio dedicato a San Matteo, costituito da un’unica aula rettangolare, coperta da un soffitto in legno, con una piccola abside semicircolare. Le pareti erano intonacate e dipinte.
Verso la metà del XVII secolo, gli abitanti della comunità di Aurano manifestarono il desiderio di ottenere la concessione del fonte battesimale; i primi registri parrocchiali relativi agli atti di battesimo risalgono al 1701. Pochi anni dopo aver ottenuto un proprio fonte battesimale, la popolazione iniziò un’opera di ampliamento e di rinnovamento dell’edificio, come dimostra la lapide murata nella facciata della chiesa, in cui si legge che la chiesa fu totalmente rinnovata nel 1712.
Il campanile, nella sua posizione attuale, venne costruito nel 1726 e il portico e la facciata nel 1769.
La chiesa venne eretta a parrocchia il 22 aprile 1839. La facciata tripartita con un pronao di ingresso a tre arcate non corrisponde ad una tripartizione interna, ma ritrova un’aula unica coperta da volte a botte unghiate e da un presbiterio coperto da una cupola emisferica e chiuso da un’abside poligonale. Le varie cappelle laterali sono dedicate alla Madonna di Re, a Sant’Antonio da Padova, alla Beata Vergine del Rosario e al Sacro Cuore, mentre la statua di San Matteo è retta dall’altare maggiore in marmi policromi. La colonna sormontata da una croce presente sul sagrato testimonia l’antica funzione cimiteriale dell’area.
In 1585 there was already a small oratory dedicated to San Matteo (St. Matthew), consisting of a single rectangular room, covered by a wooden ceiling, with a small semi-circular apse. The walls were plastered and painted.
In the middle of the 17th century, the inhabitants of Aurano expressed their wish to obtain the permission for the baptismal font; the first parish registers relating to baptism date back to 1701. A few years after obtaining the baptismal font, the population started an activity of enlargement and restoration of the building, as shown by the tombstone walled in the facade of the church, on which you read that the church was totally renovated in 1712.
The bell tower, in its current position, was built in 1726 and the porch and facade in 1769.
The church was erected as a parish on April 22, 1839. The tripartite facade with a three-arch entrance pronaos does not correspond to the internal tripartition: a single room is covered by barrel vaults with lunettes and by a presbytery covered with a hemispherical dome and closed by a polygonal apse. The various side chapels are dedicated to the Madonna di Re, Sant’Antonio da Padova, Beata Vergine del Rosario and to Sacro Cuore, while the statue of Saint Matthew is supported by the high altar made of polychrome marbles. The column surmounted by a cross on the parvis shows the ancient cemetery function of the area.
