Il cosiddetto “ponte romano” che collega Rovegro, frazione di San Bernardino Verbano, al territorio di Cossogno, fu in realtà fu costruito nel 1773, come testimonia la data incisa, insieme ad una croce, al centro del ponte.
Furono viaggiatori ottocenteschi a dargli questo nome, affascinati dal suo aspetto apparentemente ben più antico. Completamente in pietra, con forma a schiena d’asino, supera il torrente S. Bernardino, in un punto suggestivo per la profonda forra, le cascatelle e gli aspetti naturalistici.
Fu costruito sul luogo in cui, sin dal tardo Medioevo, era presente una passerella di legno. E’ attestato da documenti della fine del 1500 che la comunità di Rovegro era obbligata a fornire alle comunità di Cossogno e Ungiasca due piante per fare due travi per costruire il ponte, ogni volta che fosse necessario ricostruirlo per un’alluvione o altri motivi.
Curioso è il fatto che il nome dialettale del ponte per i cossognesi è “punt de Ruégher” e per gli abitanti di Rovegro “punt da Cussögn “.
The so-called “Roman bridge”, which connects Rovegro, a hamlet of San Bernardino Verbano, to the territory of Cossogno, was actually built in 1773, as testified by the date engraved, together with a cross, in the centre of the bridge.
Nineteenth-century travellers gave this name to the bridge since they were fascinated by its apparently much older appearance. It is completely made of stone, with a donkey back shape, it crosses the S. Bernardino stream, in a suggestive area thanks to the deep gorge, the small waterfalls and the naturalistic aspects.
It was built in a place where, since the late Middle Ages, there was a wooden walkway. Some documents dating back to the end of the 16th century testify that the community of Rovegro was obliged to supply the communities of Cossogno and Ungiasca with two trees in order to make two beams to build the bridge, whenever it was necessary to rebuild it after a flood or for other reasons.
It is curious that the dialectal name of the bridge for the inhabitants of Cossogno is “punt de Ruégher” and for the inhabitants of Rovegro “punt da Cussögn “.
