Il ponte del Dragone si trova circa alla metà del sentiero che dall’abitato di Scareno (frazione del comune di Aurano) sale all’Alpe Piaggia. Le origini del nome non sono chiare: due le leggende più accreditate. Secondo la prima il nome sarebbe legato alla famiglia che nel XVII secolo possedeva i diritti di estrazione di una piccola miniera d’oro, situata lungo il torrente San Giovanni, ancora oggi faticosamente raggiungibile lungo un sentiero ormai dismesso.
La seconda leggenda è legata ai Dragoni, milizie a cavallo, sia dei Savoia sia della vicina Svizzera. Forse un drappello sperduto e visto dagli alpigiani? Forse accompagnatori dei gabellieri dei Borromeo, per scongiurare assalti da parte degli abitanti, quando esigevano tasse in alimenti troppo onerose?

Ponte del Dragone is located about half the path that from the village of Scareno (hamlet of the municipality of Aurano) goes up to Alpe Piaggia. The origins of the name are not clear: there are two legends. According to the first one, the name would be linked to the family that, in the 17th century, owned the right for the extraction of a small gold mine, situated along the river San Giovanni, which is very difficult to reach still today, along a path that has now fallen into disuse.
The second legend is linked to the Dragoni, militias on horseback, both of the Savoy family and of neighbouring Switzerland. Is it perhaps a small military unit lost and seen by the mountain inhabitants? Did they perhaps accompany the tax collectors of the Borromeo, in order to avoid assaults by the inhabitants, when they demanded too high taxes?
