St. Leonard, the patron Saint of the municipality of Trontano, is celebrated on 6 November. On this occasion women wear the typical dress and parade the streets carrying the “cavagnette” on their head. They consist of wooden structures fixed inside a basket, to be put on the head, adorned with flowers of paper or cloth, colourful ribbons, numerous necklaces, “the curai”, together with jewellery and sacred images. Traditionally, the “cavagnette” were carried on the head of virgin girls, who had to be available to offer a day of work to the owners, since the preparation of the votive offering was laborious because every year, at the end of the festival, it had to be dismantled. The cavagnette represent an ancient tradition, interrupted for many years and recovered in 1975 by the will of the women of the Folk Group. Thanks to these women, who every year restore the cavagnette or build new ones, and then use them during the festival, this traditional heritage is still alive.
